Some time ago, I've written a small patch to be able to control the hard disk-acoustic management supported by newer kernels with hdparm.

This patch is already included in current versions of hdparm, so you'll need :

• a current version of hdparm >= 4.7 from http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/system/hardware/
• a current version of the kernel, not sure when AAM came in, but if you're unsure just search for set_acoustic in drivers/ide/ide-disk.c

Now, you can get or set the acoustic management value with

hdparm -M [value] where value should be between 128 (quiet) and 254 (fast).
